Explore some of the 24,000 islands in the Stockholm Archipelago by sail yacht from quaint little coastal town of Vaxholm, only an hour from Stockholm City! Many islands are uninhabited with untouched forests, smooth rock formations and natural beauty. The islands vary in size from they which are several miles long to small rocks and make this entire sailing adventure just breath taking. You and your fellow passengers will sail the yacht under a watchful eye of one of our experienced English speaking captains. Finish the day with dinner in Vaxholm and/or with a cruise back to the city on one of the classic 100 year old steamers!
Here is an video that one of our passengers made during a day sailing tour in July 2014:
Someone has counted to more than 24,000 islands and skerries in the Stockholm Archipelago. Nowhere on earth can you find such an abundance of natural beautiful islands so close together. The islands are often abundant with wild edible berries and you can let your imagination wander - you may even see small fairies and elves that may be encountered in the ancient forests of Stockholm. For they who dare there are possibilities to take a swim from some of the smooth rocky shores. Parts of the Stockholm archipelago are suggested to become a World Heritage area and a National Park.
To explore the islands you need a boat. We offer day sails in the Archipelago on one of our luxury 40-48,5 feet yachts. You and your fellow passengers will sail the yacht under a watchful eye of one of our experienced English speaking captains. We don´t require any previous experience. Your skipper will guide you in the Archipelago, its history, flora, and fauna. And we offer good food as well!
We start at the quaint little coastal town of Vaxholm, an hour nice ferry ride from the Stockholm city centre. After embarking the sailboat we will sail through narrow straits lined with old houses from the 19th century mixed with modern luxury villas before we cross bigger bays to reach more wild and uninhabited islands. There we can chose one of the islands to take a swim, explore ashore and have lunch. In the end it is the wind and you who decides the program.
Our tours are 8-9 hours, but we can also offer private overnight tours to reach further out in the archipelago.
If you have time, why not stay a night in Vaxholm, before or after the tour. There are many small B&B, but also the Vaxholm hotel, right in the harbour. See more about Vaxholm here>>
We sail on May 26 & 27 and on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June 1 to September 9, except June 22 - 24 2018.
The Captain will pick you up at 09.30 (all sailing days) at Waxholmsbolagets Waiting room (inside or outside depending on the weather) right on the quay in Vaxholm.
To get there you travel on your own by ferry from the Strömkajen ferry terminal across the water from the Royal Palace, in front of The Grand Hotel (metro station Kungsträdgården).
The ferry leaves the Strömkajen ferry terminal at:
Up to Sunday August 19: 08.30 all weekdays.
August 24 - September 9: 08.15 on Fridays, 08.30 on Saturdays and 08.15 on Sundays.
Note: Always look at the Journey planner for exact Schedule or call: 08-679 58 30.
The ferry ride takes about 1 hour and costs SEK 75 for adults, children and pensioners SEK 50.
It is also possible to take bus 670 from Danderyds sjukhus to the end station in the port of Vaxholm. You can reach the bus terminal by the red line, direction Mörby Centrum. The bus leaves twice every hour, weekdays more often. Please see: www.sl.se or call: 08-600 10 00
The same ticket is valid for the bus as for the metro, but you need one additional coupon (and a return ticket). You can´t buy tickets on the bus, but need to buy a prepaid ticket in the metro stations or at “Pressbyrån”, shop for magazines etc that you’ll find all over. An alternative is to have the Stockholm card or a travel pass. They are not valid on the ferry.
To go to Vaxholm town by car, chose motorway E20 towards Norrtälje. After some 15 km take exit 185 for road 274 to Vaxholm for another 15 km drive. It is a bit hard to find parking in Vaxholm so we recommend public transport.
The captain will meet you at the landing of the ferry, also close to the bus stop, at the time stated at When above.
The sail tour will finish about 18.00. Count on being back in the city by ferry or bus between 19.30 and 20.00. Most evenings you can chose to return to the city by a classic 100 year old steamer and have a nice dinner onboard. That cruise will take 1 hour 15 minutes. The captain will know the timetable.
